Is it ok to change a flag colour for design style?

Is it ok to change a flag to suit a different environment? Can we change shapes colours of even symbols without causing offence?

I love flags, I’m a hidden Vexillology fan and am very fond or Roman Mars’ video on city flags, (I actually think it’s a great way of showing someone the work, details and importance of good design) and will comment on a nice flag design when out and about, something my partner finds immensely boring.

But is it ok to change a flag to suit a different environment? On my store site’s delivery page https://www.laetusdesigns.store/delivery I used flags to show the delivery times and costs per country served. All good but the flag colours looked odd on my site, various shades of blues and reds against an orange, grey and white website. So I changed the colour to suit.

But is this OK? The flags clearly look like the countries they represent and they look cool enough in my opinion. But is removing the representative colours for a flag morally ok? Ireland as an example has green for Roman Catholics, Orange for Protestants with a white centre to represent peace/truce. If I change the flag colours to anything else, does it loose all meaning? Is it offensive?

Design food for thought.
